A WORLD AWAY
In September 2000 Matthew and I went to New York for a few days to 'try out'
a possible mix engineer for 'Draw'...we'd already finished most of the album
but still had a million ideas flying around our heads. Whilst we were in the
studio Matthew borrowed a lovely old Gibson acoustic guitar from an old mate of mine and sat for hours gently strumming an aching chord sequence that seemed to hang, suspended in the air. Now and again he'd break off and scribble away in his ever present notebook. He sang softly to himself and I'd catch the odd word here and there...magic was happening.
Back in Nottingham he played me the whole song...'Tell me when you're coming...'.
The studio was spellbound and we set about recording this little gem.
Wanting to achieve a 'wash' of ambience, we walked around the nearby
Arboretum with a mini disk recording the Autumnal atmosphere. Next we
recorded acoustic guitar, Eddy overdubbed an electric piano and Matthew
sang...perfection. Just these four elements make up my favourite song on the
album...it still takes me back, half a world away to NYC.
