I had been going through a phase where whatever I listened to failed to inspire me.
Then I happened to see the video for 'Call My Name Out' on one of the music channels.
Something about it really caught my attention. So I went straight out and searched for a cd.
Right from the 1st track - 'Four Minute Rebellion,' I knew this was something a bit different.
Matthew wrote some of the most beautiful lyrics I've ever heard.
I then proceeded to annoy all my friends & family by trying to brain-wash them into listening to 'Draw'!!
I was looking forward so much to new material, but of course, tragically it wasn't to be.

He is sorely missed, and will never be forgotten.

Lynne,
Gloucester.

The first time I heard Matthew was on Later with Jools Holland, I bought 'Draw,' and have not stopped listening to it since. It always lifts my spirits when I need a bit of a pick up.
So thanks Matthew.
A life gone to soon.

I'm from the U.S. and heard 'Let Your Shoulder Fall' on my Yahoo launchcast and fell in love with Matthew's voice and style on the spot, only to discover a few days later that he is no longer with us.
I cried.
His extraordinary talent alone is an overwhelming loss.

My deepest sympathies to all those who knew and loved Matthew.

Matthew’s death is a tragic loss as he had exceptional talent.
My thoughts are with his family. I hope that they can find comfort in his beautiful music.

Rest in peace Matthew.

Matthew,

The first time I head you was on the UK play channel a few years ago being
interviewed and playing and I was totally hooked. It was wonderfully
touching timeless music, you made it seem so effortless and beautiful.

But not even that could prepare me for the first (and unfortunately only)
live gig I ever seen you at supporting starsailor at Glasgow's QMU. It was
great - you totally played the headliners off the stage - absolutely amazing
stuff - up there with my all time favourite live gigs.

Could'nt believe when I heard about your passing. Your music has meant so
much to me over the past few years and I was truly looking forward to
hearing more.

You where a truly inspiring musician and your spirit will always live on in
your music.

We miss you so much.............

Michael Gibson

Matthew was of the nicest most genuine people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting.
His loss saddens me and I would like to send my heart felt wishes out to all his family
and friends who knew him better than I did. He will be sorely missed by lots of people.

I will always think fondly of you when listening to your music.

Tony Parry ( Nottingham)

To Matthew's friends and family:

I know this loss is the hardest for you. Words cannot capture the beauty of Matthew's spirit,
or the sincerity of his emotions. The honesty in his music creates an instant bond between
anyone who listens, and I hope that people will still be led to "Draw" and his demo's and ep's.
I know everyone in his fanbase will fight to make sure of that.

"Years from now I will return to
Say the things I never could.
Maybe you will not remember,
Maybe you will not forget."

We won't forget.
Rest in peace Matthew, we love you.

-Caitlin A. from New York, USA

Matthew,

I hope your mind is peaceful and love is everything you do...

You were and are an inspiration to us all - you had such a pure and positive effect
on everyone who was touched by you and your music

I wake up every morning and hope this nightmare will end, my only comfort is
remembering all the wonderful times we spent together and when you helped me
through difficult moments

Life isn't the same without you

We all miss you so much and we will never forget you

I cant belive it. I've only just read the news brief after seeing a post on
another site and I want to pass on my all condolences to Matthew's family
and friends.

It doesn't really sound right or enough, but I dont know what else to say
except for sorry and thankyou.

I never met Matthew personally but I saw him in Copenhagen when I was
studying in Denmark, and just immediately fell in love with his music. I
bought Draw as soon as possible, and have rarely not had it playing. I dont
think there is any other album I own that I connect to more or play as much.
Each and every song has a special place or meaning for me, and none of them
will ever fade in the memories they hold, if anything, they will last longer
now that my anticipation of maybe more to come in future years will not be
fulfilled.

I cant begin to express how much I appreciate what Matthew's talent bought
to me, and fail further trying to find the words to express how thankful I
am of how he, in such a remote way, really helped me and for what he has
given to me.

His music really touched so many people and personally I know it helped as
well. I cannot think of any other higher compliment or achievement. To have
helped and/or made a difference to those who knew him and those who didn't.
To bring happiness with an unmistakeable talent is in itself a talent worth
celebrating. The world has lost something special, but what remains and what
memories are held can always bring further joy. I know I will always
remember...

Thankyou and sorry, but most of all thankyou.

Someone once said to me “You can’t have the rainbow with out the rain!”
Our rainbow has now gone but the rain lingers on.

With the consolation, that be the pot of gold Matthew has left each and every one of us.
Thank you, Matthew!

Now the Polar Bears must keep on dancing, while we pray Matthew is riding that special wave.

You are a source of inspiration to us all and a dear friend.

I will constantly miss you and cherish the fond memories we all shared.

All the love in the world, rest in peace Matthew.

I went to school with Graham (Matthew) and while I won't profess to have been
his best mate, we always seemed to talk for ages whenever we met up again in
Abergavenny. We played a bit of sport together in school, and despite his
quiet, unassuming nature, I can remember his enthusiasm for success when
playing cricket in particular.

I got into his music when I went to see him play in Barfly in Cardiff a
couple of years ago, his performance that night was truly amazing, and I
remember a few of my colleagues in work at the time raving about it.

Graham was a genuinely nice guy, and I'm sure he'll be missed by many both
for his music, and for the person he was.

All the best Gray!

I still can't believe that Matthew is gone...His music was and is an
inspiration.
I was one of the few priviledged to meet Matthew after a gig in 2001, and I
was knocked out by how down to earth and good natured this gifted individual
was.
The deaths of Johnny Cash and Warren Zevon were a denting blow to the
industry, but they at least had a good few decades of music making...
Matthew was taken so suddenly from us, but the genius of Draw and the memories remain...

RIP Matthew Jay

Ben Jones, Kent UK

I heard a song called 'Call My Name Out' a year ago on a music channel on Sky.
I instantly fell in love with it, and have been trying to find out what it was for almost a year....
I have finally located it to find out the sad news about Mathew Jay...

I am gutted. He was very talented, and I was hoping for many more great songs like this one.

I will be sure to play this song to everyone who will listen to it, and to those who won't.

Much sadness Jessica Austin...my love goes out to all his family and friends xx

I had the privilege to meet Matthew about two years ago in NYC at a quiet evening with his
producer, Martyn and a mutual friend. We sat in her living room listening to Matthew's new album
that hadn't been released yet.

I remember him as such a sweet, shy guy. I told him that he resembled Trent Reznor
(Matthew was so new to pop culture that he didn't even know who he was).

I was so shocked to hear the news of his death. He had so much to offer and had such a
sweet soul. I quite don't understand it. I probably never will.

The news of Matthew's death came as such a shock. It doesn't seem fair that
such a bright light was dimmed so soon. The first song of his I heard was
"Please don't send me away" on the Mark and Lard show a few years back. Its
sentiments struck a chord with me at time, as a mixed-up teen trying to find
my way in the world. It's one of the few songs to ever make me cry. And all
this delivered in one of the most lovely singing voices in music.

I was sure he was going to become a very respected singer/songwriter, had he
only had the chance. Those whose ears his music had reached won't forget
him. What he has left us with are some great songs, and good memories.
I'd like to thank him, and send my deepest condolences to those close to
him.

Kirsty Davie, Northants

We would like to thank you so much for the Web site you have been running for sometime
now for Matthew. It has made it possible for us to read the wonderful tributes to Matthew
from people all over the world and this has meant a great deal to us in our time of
immense sorrow.

We would like to thank everyone for their tributes to Matthew and messages of sympathy
to his family. It is a great comfort to know how highly you all regarded his music and
Matthew as a person. He is probably smiling down now at all your compliments!

Matthew was such a special son to us. We loved him so very much and he loved us.
The finality of his passing is at times almost too hard to bear. When Matthew was only
9 months old he was critically ill in hospital, we could have lost him. Thankfully we did not.
He fought hard and pulled through. We take comfort in the 25 years we shared with him
and all the good times we all spent together - supporting his football matches, camping,
playing in our family band, birthdays, Christmases, enjoying his cooking, watching
'Friends' and cricket, as well as the excitment of hearing 'Please Don't Send Me Away'
the first time it was played on Radio 1, and the immense pride in all he had achieved
with his songs.

Throughout Matthew's success in the music business, his personal qualities never
changed. He was still the same kind-hearted, considerate and thoughtful person,
so nice to be with. We were so pleased that he spent most of this year with us in
Wales before he started the MA course in London and grateful for the time we all
shared with him.

It is our hope that Matthew will live on through the songs he has created, and we thank
you all for your part in this. Matthew's life was shorter than we all would have wished,
however we take courage in the knowledge of the love we shared and all that he has
given to us, and we will cherish his memory always.

With our kind good wishes

Tony and Hilary Jay (Matthew's parents).

We miss you Matt.... We love you and your music, and we hope you found a better place.
Goodbye, thanx for writing songs like "Meteorology"... See ya

I was lucky enough to see Matthew a couple of times and to chat briefly to him once.
What a nice guy. I was genuinely shocked and saddened to hear of his death.

I love music. I loved "Draw." I will cherish it. Small comfort to his family I know, but he will
be missed and remembered by strangers like me, who were touched by his music.

Thank you Matthew

Matthew, this world is a much sadder place without you.
I can't listen to Meteorology without crying. You will always be remembered
by those who have heard your music, in their memories you will live on forever.

Love to your family, how proud they must be of you to see just how important
you are to so many people.

IT WAS SUCH A SHOCK TO HEAR MATTHEW HAD DIED IN SUCH A
TRAGIC WAY. HE WAS SUCH AN INSPIRING TALENT.

I THOUGHT "DRAW" WAS AN AMAZING ALBUM, AND THOUGHT
IT WAS GREAT THAT HE WON CRITICAL ACCLAIM FOR IT .
YET SADLY FAME BROUGHT ITS USUAL PROBLEMS WHEN ALL HE
REALLY WANTED TO DO WAS MAKE MUSIC.

I TRUELY BELIEVE THE ROLE OF CELEBRITY IS ONLY SUITED
TO THOSE WHO CRAVE IT, AND IS TOO OFTEN DUMPED ON
THOSE WHO ARE JUST TRYING TO SUCCEED IN A WORLD WHERE
TALENT OFTEN ISN'T ENOUGH.

MATTHEW WAS OFTEN COMPARED TO NICK DRAKE,
BUT ALSO TO THE AMAZING ELLIOT SMITH,
WHO ALSO TRAGICALLY DIED IN OCTOBER. HE ALSO STRUGGLED
TO UNDERSTAND THE REQUIREMENTS OF FAME, AND JUST AS IT
LOOKED LIKE HE HAD OVERCOME SOME OF HIS OWN PERSONAL
DEMONS, HE TOOK HIS OWN LIFE.

REST IN PEACE MATTHEW, YOUR MUSIC WILL CARRY YOUR SPIRIT
ON, AND CONTINUE TO BRING HAPPINESS AND COMFORT TO
THOSE WHO KNEW YOU, AND TO YOUR FANS. XX

Ive been a fan of Matthew's for as long as I can remember, & feel so terribly sad
about his death - I've followed his success continously, & my only regret is that I
was never fortunate enough to see him play live.

My deepest sympathies go out to his family, friends & fans...His music lives on,
and I'm sure more & more people will be touched by it when they hear it.....

I can't believe that he is gone.
I had the song Call my name out, not knowing that it was by MJ, and then I found an article
in a magazine that he died, and I just had to find out more about him.

I have listened to his music now that I have found out about him, and his words and voice
are just so beautiful, I really wish that I could have found his inspirational music before he left,
so that I may have been have to see him live.

Brendan.

First heard Matthew Jay on the Joe Wiley show on Radio One, she played
'You're Always Going too Soon' back in 2001 or so. For ages I searched for
any other music of his I could find, but to no avail. Then I finally came across
the EP's on Ebay and then purchased the album. Unbelievable music, totally
original stuff.

I don't know what put it into my head but I was looking through my records
in early October, and came across the 'Friendly Fire' EP, I hadnt listened to
it for a while so I put it on and was as amazed by the songs as when I had
first bought it. I also had a strum along with the 'Draw' album as well. I
then went on the Net the next day to find his website, just to see if he had
any gigs etc. coming up, and found out the terrible news.

Although I hadn't seen him live or anything, I was a massive fan of Matthew's
music, I even got a load of my mates interested as well.

Such a sad loss to the Music Industry. Let's just hope his family find it possible
to release some of the new stuff he was working on.

From the words of the man himself....'Your Always Going Too Soon.'

Stephen Kerr

First heard Matthew's CD on a listening post 2-3 years ago,
and, on the strength of 'Four Minute Rebellion,' bought it.
My three kids now aged 10,12 and 14. all remember the song,
and my 12 and 14 year olds now request I play it on car journeys,
along with Warren Zeavon! You are in good company Matthew,
and your music will live on, and on, if my kids have anything to say
on the matter - especially as they have asked me to teach them how to play the song!
You will be sadly missed.

Tony,Willa,Eric,Diana and David King, Cardiff.
